When we started sprinkling chia seeds on our breakfast every morning, we never realized just how good it would taste and make us feel. In less than a week, we were adding this epic seed to everything. A bowl of yogurt, fresh fruit, and chia became our favorite combo, and we set out to create the healthiest possible variation while keeping this perfect mix unwaveringly delicious!
Our journey to create a health snack of epic proportions was simple and organic. We started with the yogurt. We found small family-owned farms in Chenango County, New York with non-GMO and rbGH free milk. We made sure the cows on these farms had names — not numbers — and were strictly grass fed. But we didn’t stop there! We’d heard enough about the inhumane practices at mega milk manufacturers and how cows were kept in tiny pens — we wanted NOTHING to do with them. We made sure all of our milk came from pasture-raised cows that grazed in fields, not pens!
With A LOT of high quality milk, we set out to make a supremely thick, protein-packed Greek Yogurt by straining off nearly all of the liquid and some of the whey. Next, we looked for all-natural, domestic fruit. We found whole, wild blueberries from Oregon, Southern California-grown strawberries, Washington and Oregon-raised blackberries, and sweet peaches from Central California.
Then came the most important part, finding whole, nutrient-packed chia seeds. We knew the importance of fiber in the morning, but, as much as we loved yogurt for breakfast, we could never find it with this vital nutrient. We were thrilled when we learned that one small serving of chia seeds packed more fiber than an apple! We also found out that producers were less likely to mix different seeds with white chia than black because they would stand out more. Sourcing exclusively white chia became a MUST to making our breakfast as pure and epic as possible!
When we added all of these ingredients together we had a powerhouse of live and active probiotic cultures, omega-3s, antioxidants, potassium, magnesium, and iron, but we didn’t stop there! We spent months experimenting with different variations until The Epic Seed was born: an optimal balance of Protein, Fiber and Healthy Fat for just 150 calories!
